Is it bad to leave the subwoofer of a 5.1 home theater system disconnected?

I live in an apartment and while I love the surround sound, the subwoofer manages to draw complaints. I was told by another Yahoo answers user that disconnecting a speaker can result in ruining the amplifer, confirm or deny?
